Literally, the term non-violence means ‘non-injury’ to others. The concept of non-violence is based on the fundamental goodness and politeness of man in the course of humanity. It gives the meaning of avoiding hate and accepting the Universe through love. From decades, wise men have preached the doctrine of love, peace and non-violence. During ancient times, Buddha, Mahavira Jain, Jesus Christ, Guru Nanak primarily uphold the concept of non-violence. It was accepted to that extent that even a single violence act was considered a sin.
In the fight for justice and freedom, non-violence has always been the most effective way to struggle although it has been proven to be the toughest and longest procedure. Still, in the long run of modesty and honesty, non-violence has an ultimate victory. All these are gained just by avoiding violence i.e., use of physical force. No success is gained in bloodshed. The harsh reality is that nothing can be achieved by just inflicting pain on others. Hatred only destroys whereas love only constructs.
Mahatma Gandhi, The father of the nation, is considered as the apostle of non- violence. He gave non-violence a true meaning and also enlarged its concepts. According to Gandhiji, only non-violence can eradicate the evils present in oneself. The path of non-violence needs more courage and self-sacrifices. In that context, Gandhiji once said that “non-violence is not the weapon of the coward but of the strong.” He believed that freedom can only be gained through non-violence and Satyagraha (the search for truth). Thus, in the struggle for independence, he used it as the most powerful weapon. He always said that ahimsa is the most powerful and active way to protest against injustice. Gandhiji encouraged everyone to follow the path of truth and ahimsa so as to signify the meaning and existence of ahimsa to construct a strong nation.
In this modern era, violence has already taken its verge which is the most common reason for human sufferings. People are desperately indulged in doing war. Hatred has reached its limits and love is in the edge of extinction. Due to lack of patience, perseverance and courage people are misled in the wrong turn. No one cares about losing. Man today is completely lost in the crowd of hate and violence.
The purpose of life is to be happy. Our humanity needs happiness, not sufferings. Violence is not the ultimate solution for anything. The greatest fortune for happiness comes from the beneath of love and peace. Thus, we have to come jointly to bring as much as love, harmony, equality and peace in the society such that no violence can ever be born from its roots. We should devote ourselves to mental peace. So, let’s join hands together to bring peace for the betterment of society.
